Who are you and what are you currently working on?
I’m Thomas Schmeling and work at askgeorge.com. We are testing products with 30 people, live, at our rooms in Hamburg, Germany. We produce reviews, photos, 360° views
How did you get started in affiliate marketing? What keeps you excited you about it?
One of my partners came to me with his idea. He saw all those shady websites, claiming to deliver test reviews but instead only repeating the same product details over and over. We want to be a counterpart to those and to the customer reviews. Customer reviews can be helpful, but how many coffee machines does John Doe buy at a time? You might get a five star rating, but he just don’t know the other vendor, giving you a better machine for a lower price. We can deliver a broader view.
What is one piece of advice you’d give to a newbie affiliate marketer? And what is one piece of advice they should ignore?
Build something you would use yourself, or you could recommend to your parents. Don’t focus too much on technical details and loose yourself in webmaster forums and bad SEO advice.
What has been your favorite mistake? A mistake that in retrospect led to a great lesson and progress in your affiliate marketing?
Don’t focus too much on technical details. Get your content right and follow your main goal. This will help a lot more than a site that is some milliseconds faster.
What is one piece of software or a web service (besides Geniuslink) that allows you to to be more effective as an affiliate marketer?
Our own backend software. It’s a frontend for our database where we store all the product details and test outcomes. Every test we are preparing and doing is documented. It helps a lot for getting the content into other languages.
How do you continue to educate yourself as an affiliate marketer? What are some of your favorite resources for learning?
Search engines. Not just the big one. They help you a lot with documentation and you just can use them to see your competitors live. Most SEO Tools are just fancy frontends for google.
